How hourly pay converts to a salary

The standard shortcut is that a full-time year has 2,080 working hours: 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. Multiply an hourly rate by 2,080 to get the annual equivalent, and divide an annual salary by 2,080 to get its hourly equivalent. A $24 hourly wage is therefore about $49,920 a year, and a $52,000 salary is $25 an hour.

  1. Weekly pay = hourly rate × regular hours + hourly rate × overtime multiplier × overtime hours.
  2. Yearly pay = weekly pay × paid weeks per year (52 minus unpaid weeks).
  3. Monthly average = yearly pay ÷ 12 (months differ in length, so actual monthly paychecks vary).
  4. Biweekly pay = weekly × 2; semi-monthly pay = yearly ÷ 24.

Biweekly versus semi-monthly pay

The two sound similar but are not the same. Biweekly pay arrives every two weeks — 26 paychecks in most years, and 27 in some years depending on the calendar. Semi-monthly pay arrives twice a month, often on the 15th and last day — always 24 paychecks. Each semi-monthly paycheck is therefore a little larger than a biweekly one for the same annual salary. For budgeting, biweekly workers often plan on two paychecks a month and treat the two “extra” months with three paychecks as a bonus.

Unpaid time off and part-time work

If you are paid only for the hours you work, weeks you take off unpaid reduce your yearly total. Someone earning $24 an hour who takes two unpaid weeks a year is paid for 50 weeks, or $48,000, rather than $49,920. Paid holidays and paid vacation do not reduce the total — that is why salaried jobs usually use 52 weeks. For part-time work, enter your usual weekly hours; for irregular schedules, average your hours over several weeks.

Adding overtime

Non-exempt employees in the US usually earn time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek. Enter your typical weekly overtime hours and the calculator adds them at the multiplier you choose. Five hours of overtime a week at $24 an hour adds $180 a week — over $9,000 a year across 52 weeks. Overtime is rarely steady, so a cautious budget uses your regular hours only and treats overtime as extra.

Gross versus take-home pay

All the figures above are gross pay, before income tax, Social Security and Medicare, state and local taxes, retirement contributions and health insurance premiums. The optional deductions field lets you apply a rough overall percentage to see an estimated take-home figure. Actual withholding depends on your filing status, state, benefit elections and pre-tax contributions, so check a recent pay stub or a dedicated paycheck calculator for an accurate number.

Comparing an hourly job with a salaried offer

When you compare jobs, convert both to the same basis and include what is not in the headline rate. Salaried roles may include paid holidays, vacation and benefits worth thousands of dollars a year, but they may also expect longer hours without overtime. Hourly roles may pay overtime but offer fewer paid days off. Use the salary-to-hourly calculator with the hours you really expect to work: a $60,000 salary for 50 hours a week is about $23 an hour, less than a $25 hourly job at 40 hours.

Raises, shift differentials and multiple jobs

A raise expressed as a percentage is easiest to judge in annual terms: a 4% raise on $24 an hour is 96 cents, which is about $2,000 a year at 2,080 hours. Shift differentials — extra pay for nights, weekends or on-call hours — are usually a fixed amount per hour, so add them to the hourly rate only for the hours they apply to, or run the calculator twice and add the results. If you hold two part-time jobs, calculate each separately with its own hours and rate and add the annual totals; overtime is normally assessed per employer, so two 25-hour jobs do not create overtime even though you work 50 hours in total.

Worked example

You earn $24 an hour, work 40 regular hours and average 4 hours of overtime at time and a half. Weekly gross pay is 40 × $24 + 4 × $36 = $1,104. Over 50 paid weeks, with two unpaid weeks off, that is $55,200 a year, or about $4,600 a month before deductions. Biweekly paychecks would be $2,208 each.

Frequently asked questions

How many work hours are in a year?

The common figure is 2,080 hours: 40 hours × 52 weeks. It includes paid holidays and vacation.

Is $25 an hour good?

It equals about $52,000 a year full time. Whether it is good depends on your location, living costs and benefits.

How do I convert salary to hourly?

Divide the annual salary by hours worked per year — 2,080 for a standard full-time year.

Why is my monthly pay different each month?

Paydays fall on fixed intervals, so some months contain three biweekly paychecks. The monthly figure here is an average.

Does the calculator include taxes?

Only as a rough percentage you enter. Actual withholding depends on your situation.
